The Wild Brush Artist Collective
Help Us Build an Art Community
The Wild Brush Artist Collective is a group of dedicated En Plein Air painters who brave the High Desert wilderness of the Galisteo Basin Preserve, to paint together one evening each week. These group painting sessions will be facilitated by an instructor who will begin each session with a brief presentation related to painting, color theory, or Art history. The remainder of the session will be dedicated to painting and discussing the topic of the week. An instructor, who will be painting with the group, will also be available to answer questions and provide guidance, but this time will be primarily self-driven by the artists in the group.
Scheduling and timing of The Wild Brush Artist Collective will be determined by group members. If you are interested in joining, please contact us today.
FAQs
Where will the group meet?
1
The Galisteo Basin Artist Collective will meet once a week in the hours before sunset. (The exact day and time will be determined by the group.) Participants will meet at the Cowboy Shack Trailhead and proceed into the Galisteo Basin Preserve wilderness to our discussion location. Please note that discussions will take place very near to hiking trails for easier accessibility.
What should I bring?
2
Participants should dress according to seasonal weather conditions, bring plenty of water to drink, paints and materials, an easel, and a portable chair, or blanket to sit on.
What is the High Desert Classroom?
3
We will be meeting and painting in the Galisteo Basin Preserve, a High Desert landscape consisting of 12,000 acres. It is a desert wilderness, home to snakes, coyotes, birds, cacti, juniper trees, piñon pines, and other wild plants. It is often very hot, and at times, windy—but this environment is also a great teacher.
Do I have to speak in the group discussions?
4
Participants are strongly encouraged to engage in our group discussions, but it is not required. It is expected that all participants read the content and materials that are distributed for discussion, and also keep their comments relative to the topics being discussed.
I have never attended a Semi-Socratic Seminar before, how does it work?
5
Our Semi-Socratic Seminar discussion model is primarily participant driven, but focused and monitored by a group facilitator. A topic, in the form of an art-based academic journal article is shared with the group days prior to our meeting. The article and specific questions are then presented to the group for discussion. Members are encouraged to comment and present further questions and ideas to the group. Suggestions on how to engage in this discussion model are listed in the above in our “Semi-Socratic Seminar Guidelines”.
